Singapore in December: Christmas Wonderland, the Countdown, and the Highest Prices of the Year

December is the most expensive and most crowded month of the Singapore year. It is also the only month that has Christmas Wonderland and the midnight countdown. Here is what you get and what you give up.

December is the priciest, busiest month in Singapore, and it is also the only month with Christmas Wonderland and the midnight fireworks over Marina Bay. This guide covers peak northeast monsoon weather, the crowding created by two three-day weekends, and how to visit in December without paying December prices.

1. Is December a good month to visit Singapore?

December has the highest rates and the biggest crowds of the Singapore year, and there is still a clear case for choosing it. Christmas Wonderland and the 31 December countdown fireworks exist in no other month, and the Orchard Road lights run right through to 1 January.

Why December worksWhat to accept
Christmas Wonderland is on, and it exists only nowPeak pricing, especially from mid-December to early January
The Marina Bay countdown and midnight fireworks on 31 DecemberSchool holidays mean long queues everywhere
Christmas and New Year both fall on a Friday, so the mood peaksFor the same reason the second half of the month is packed
Daytime highs are among the lowest of the year, so walking is easierHumidity is at its annual peak and sunshine at its annual low
The Orchard Road lights are still upRain on roughly 19 days

Put simply, December is a month you buy for atmosphere, not for value. If you want the same lights for less, our Singapore in November guide is the better fit. If you want Christmas Day itself and the countdown, it has to be December.

For the full month-by-month picture, see our best time to visit Singapore guide.

2. What is the weather like in Singapore in December?

Highs of 30 to 31C make December one of the coolest months of the year, but humidity peaks and the sun barely appears. November takes the rainfall crown; December comes second.

PricesA relatively low windowThe highest of the yearDrops sharply after the first days

Worth clearing up a common misconception. December is often called the wettest month, but by the numbers November takes that title. December feels soggier for a different reason: it has the highest humidity and the least sunshine of any month.

The temperature, though, is at its annual low. A little over 30C means midday walking is more comfortable than in August or September. Nothing warm is needed, although indoor air conditioning still calls for a thin layer.

3. Peak northeast monsoon: how December rain behaves

December sits in the middle of the northeast monsoon wet phase, so rain tends to be broad and long-running. The pattern that started in November is now fully established.

The actual rhythm of December rain

A common pattern is grey in the morning, one proper downpour in the middle of the day, and clearing again by evening. In other words, December rain and December attractions are not badly matched. The lights and the countdown are almost all after dark, so an afternoon soaking often leaves the evening plan intact.

On windy days an umbrella alone will not hold, though. A thin poncho or waterproof jacket is worth the space, especially on countdown night when you may be standing outside for hours.

4. How hot does it actually feel?

On paper this is the coolest month of the year, which makes walking easier, but the humidity means you will still sweat. The hourly pattern matches other months, except the midday burden is lighter because the sun rarely breaks through.

TimeHow it feelsBest used for
7 to 10amThe most comfortable stretch, and often overcastOutdoor sights, photos, walking
10am to 1pmHumidity climbs, but easier than August or SeptemberPush the outdoor plan a little longer, or move inside

5 to 7pmMuggy the moment the rain stopsBack to the hotel, reset for the evening
After 7pmDecember evenings are good for walkingWonderland, lights, night views, hawker centres

Here is December’s quiet advantage. It is the least hot month of the year, and everything worth seeing happens in the evening. You are far less likely to abandon a night plan because of the heat, and that includes standing outside for the countdown.

5. How to build a day around the rain

As in November, treat the rain as a constant. The difference in December is that the indoor fallbacks are crowded too. So a December indoor plan is only complete once it is booked.

The cooled conservatories at Gardens by the Bay remain the most reliable wet-weather refuge. Being honest, though, over the year-end they queue in the afternoon too, and they share a site with Christmas Wonderland, so the evening is busier still. Go in the morning, and do not buy at the gate if you can avoid it.

6. What should you pack?

December packing is much like November, with two additions: wind, and a holiday dress code.

ItemWhy
Folding umbrellaRain on roughly 19 days
Thin poncho or waterproof jacketDecember gusts turn umbrellas inside out
Quick-drying shoes and spare socksQueueing in soaked shoes makes for a long day
A thin layer for air conditioningMore indoor time, and the coolest temperatures of the year
Waterproof pouchEssential on countdown night with hours outdoors
Pre-booked ticketsIn December this counts as packing. It removes the queue
One smart outfitHoliday fine dining and rooftop bars sometimes enforce a dress code

If you are trimming the list, keep the poncho and the advance bookings. Umbrellas are easy to buy locally; those two cannot be sorted out on the spot.

7. Christmas Wonderland, the signature of December

Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay is the largest and most December-specific event in Singapore. It usually opens in late November and runs to 1 January, with more than forty attractions and large illuminated structures across the site.

The exact 2026 dates have not been announced. In the most recent edition it opened in late November and ran to 1 January, operated in the evening only, and closed last entry before the gates. Check the Gardens by the Bay official channels for that year’s dates and last-entry time before you go.

ItemDetail

What it isAn evening event: large light structures, rides, a market and performances
Who forFamily-led, but popular with couples and photographers too
EntrySplit between ticketed and free zones, with the line-up changing each year

Two practical things matter. First, it overlaps with the Supertree light show, so it makes sense to do both in one evening. Second, weekend evenings mean real queues at entry and inside, so a weeknight, ideally right at opening, is a much better experience.

One caveat worth stating plainly: this is an open-air event on garden ground, so rain soaks the walking route and can delay or pause parts of the programme. Wet-weather refund policies vary by year, so if you buy ahead, check the cancellation terms at the same time.

8. The Marina Bay countdown and 31 December

The countdown at Marina Bay on the night of 31 December happens once a year, and at midnight fireworks go up across the whole bay. Performances and waterfront bazaars run through the evening before the finale.

Viewing spotWhat it is like
The PromontoryClosest to a head-on view, and fills up earliest for that reason
Marina Bay SandsMap Event PlazaSpacious and easy to reach, but the busiest
Esplanade waterfrontFrom across the water, with the skyline in frame

Getting home is the real challenge. Straight after midnight the MRT stations and the roads fill at the same time, and journeys take far longer than usual. Either book somewhere you can walk back to, or plan to linger nearby for an hour until the crowd thins.

To be straightforward about it, the countdown means standing outdoors for several hours in the second-wettest month of the year. Bring rain cover, water and comfortable shoes, and if you are with children, choose a position with more room than you think you need. Even so, this single night is why many people pick December at all.

Staying in this area removes the journey home entirely, but it is also the area where 31 December rates rise first.

9. Christmas on 25 December and the New Year weekend

Christmas 2026 falls on Friday 25 December and the New Year holiday on Friday 1 January 2027, which creates two three-day weekends. That calendar effectively decides how crowded and how expensive the second half of December will be.

DatesWhat happensEffect on visitors
19 to 24 DecemberThe run-up weekAlready busy, with rates climbing
Friday 25 DecemberChristmas public holidayPeak crowds at attractions and restaurants; some shops on shorter hours
26 to 30 DecemberBetween the holidaysStays busy and expensive
31 DecemberCountdownRoad closures and peak crowds around Marina Bay
Friday 1 JanuaryNew Year public holidayA second three-day weekend begins

The practical advice is simple. If you want a popular restaurant on Christmas Day, a reservation is not optional, and that day works best with minimal movement. Treat it as an attraction-hopping day and you will spend it in queues.

Conversely, 25 December and 1 January are excellent days for lights and night views. The streets themselves are the destination, so walking Orchard Road and Marina Bay beats forcing your way through indoor attractions.

10. What else is on in December?

Beyond Christmas and the countdown, December stacks up large events, and overlapping dates hit transport and hotels immediately.

The marathon has changed its name. The race long known as the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon now runs as the BYD Singapore International Marathon. Searching the old name may not surface current information.

Since the Orchard lights are already on from November, if lights alone are the draw, compare rates and crowds in our Singapore in November guide first. Choosing December for lights only makes sense if you are also doing Wonderland and the countdown. For the shopping strip itself see our Orchard Road guide, and for hotels along it, where to stay in Orchard.

11. Peak pricing: how much it climbs and when to book

Mid-December to early January is the most expensive window in the Singapore calendar, because school holidays and year-end demand land together.

DatesCrowds and ratesBooking approach
1 to 15 DecemberMuch easier than late December, and Wonderland is already openThe value window. Two to three weeks ahead can work
4 to 6 DecemberMarathon weekend adds city-hotel demandBook city hotels a little earlier
16 to 24 DecemberRates climb clearlyMonths ahead is advisable
25 December to 1 JanuaryHighest rates and biggest crowds of the yearAs early as possible. Countdown-view rooms earlier still
From early JanuaryFalls away quicklyShifting by a few days saves a lot if you are flexible

An honest statement before any booking link: it rains about as much as November, the rates are the highest of the year, and every attraction has a queue. If Wonderland and the countdown justify those three things, December is right. If they do not, the months either side are far better value.

If you are going anyway, there is a way to soften it: move to the first half of the month, and lock in a free-cancellation rate early, then adjust. December non-refundable deals look tempting, but this is also the month where plans are most likely to shift.

12. The best things to do in December

What rates highly in December is either exclusive to the season, indoors, or after dark.

CategoryPickWhy it suits December
Season-onlyChristmas Wonderland, the Marina Bay countdownThey exist in no other month. The reason to choose December
LightsOrchard Road displays, the Supertree light showEvening events, so the day’s rain matters less
Indoor attractionsCooled conservatories, aquarium, museums, galleriesWeather-proof, though booking is advised
ShoppingOrchard malls, VivoCityMapYear-end sale season
EatingHawker centres and festive menusThe least weather-dependent thing you can do, with seasonal specials

Conversely, outdoor water play and island activities drop down the list in December. The rain risk is high and, with school holidays running, the same venues are at their busiest.

Travelling with children? See our Singapore with kids guide. Adding the island? Our Sentosa guide helps, and food starts with the hawker centre guide.

13. How to dodge the December crowds

In December, satisfaction depends less on what you see than on when you go. The same attraction feels completely different by hour.

  1. Shift to the first half Between 1 and 15 December, rates and crowds are clearly lower while Christmas Wonderland and the Orchard lights are already running. This is the surest way to enjoy December for less.
  2. Target opening time and the last two hours Indoor attractions are quietest right at opening; evening events are quietest in the final two hours. The worst window is roughly 2pm to 6pm.
  3. Weekdays over weekends Outside the holiday weeks the difference is large. Wonderland and the theme attractions are much more comfortable on a weeknight.
  4. Buy tickets in advance In December, the ticket queue is itself part of your itinerary. Booking ahead removes that block of time entirely.
  5. Shift meals by 30 minutes Avoiding 12pm and 7pm exactly makes finding a table at a hawker centre far easier.

Reducing movement helps too. One neighbourhood per day keeps you from stacking queues on top of travel time. Routes are in our Singapore MRT and transport guide, and area character in our Singapore neighbourhoods guide.

14. A smart December day plan

Outdoors in the morning, indoors in the afternoon, festive content in the evening. That shape works for most December days. What is different from other months is that the evening is the main event.

TimePlanIf it rains
8 to 11amOutdoor sights. Overcast mornings make walking pleasantSwitch to the conservatories or an indoor gallery
11am to 1pmLunch, offset from noon by half an hourUse the basement food courts
1 to 5pmIndoor attraction or shopping. The busiest window of the dayAlready indoors, no change needed
5 to 7pmBack to the hotel and reset for the eveningA good window to wait the rain out
7 to 11pmChristmas Wonderland, the lights, night viewsMove between malls and continue

Treat the evening as the main feature in December. Overloading the day leaves nothing for the night, and the night is where this month’s headline attractions are. An afternoon break back at the hotel suits December particularly well.

15. A three-day December itinerary

The route splits depending on whether you include the countdown, so both versions are set out here.

  1. Day 1, Marina Bay and the first lights Walk the outdoor sections of Gardens by the Bay in the morning, ducking into the conservatories if it turns. Spend the afternoon indoors around Marina Bay Sands, then take the Supertree light show and Christmas Wonderland on the same site in the evening.
  2. Day 2, Orchard and the city Keep the day indoors with a museum or shopping, then walk the Orchard Road Christmas lights after dark. It is sale season, so this is a good day to build shopping in.
  3. Day 3A, if you are doing the countdown Keep the day light and close to your hotel to save energy, then claim a spot at Marina Bay from late afternoon. Being within walking distance afterwards is worth more than the view itself.
  4. Day 3B, if you are not Check the forecast: clear means Sentosa, grey means the aquarium and indoor attractions, then finish at a hawker centre.

To extend the trip, build from our 3-day Singapore itinerary.

16. December against the other months

December does not win on price; it wins on atmosphere. The question is whether that is worth paying for on your trip.

MonthStrengthTrade-off
JulyLower haze risk, the big salesSummer holiday peak
AugustNational Day fireworks and drone showsHaze climbing, very busy
SeptemberMid-Autumn lanterns, relatively quietHaze at its worst
OctoberF1 and the Deepavali light-upPeak pricing during race week
NovemberThe same lights at much lower ratesThe wettest month of the year
December (this guide)Wonderland, the countdown, peak festive atmosphereHighest prices and crowds of the year

Three decisions shape a December trip. First, whether you consciously chose the first or the second half of the month. Second, whether you booked tickets and restaurants ahead. Third, if you are doing the countdown, whether you planned the journey home.

To weigh the same lights for less, compare directly with our Singapore in November guide. The other months are covered in July, August, September and October, and the whole trip starts from the Singapore travel guide.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Is December a good time to visit Singapore?

Yes, as long as you accept that it is the most expensive and most crowded month of the year. In return, Christmas Wonderland and the 31 December countdown fireworks exist only in this month, and the Orchard Road lights run to 1 January. Think of December as buying atmosphere rather than value.

Q. What is the weather like in Singapore in December?

Highs of 30 to 31C make it one of the coolest months, but humidity is at its annual peak and sunshine at its annual low. Rainfall runs about 287 to 290mm across roughly 19 wet days, second only to November. The lower temperature actually makes walking easier than in August or September.

Q. December or November, which is better?

December if you want the countdown and Christmas Day itself; November if you want the same lights for less. The Orchard displays are lit in both months, but rates and crowds are far higher in December. On the other hand, Christmas Wonderland and the midnight fireworks simply do not exist in November.

Q. When is Christmas Wonderland on?

It generally opens at Gardens by the Bay in late November and runs to 1 January. It is an evening event and last entry closes before the gates do, so check the opening hours for that year before you go. The exact 2026 dates have not been announced yet.

Q. Where do you watch the Marina Bay countdown?

The Promontory, the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza, the Esplanade waterfront and the area around the Helix Bridge are the classic vantage points. People often claim a spot from late afternoon, with performances and waterfront bazaars running all evening before the midnight fireworks. Plan your route home in advance, because the MRT and the roads fill up at the same moment afterwards.

Q. What days do Christmas and New Year fall on in 2026?

Christmas is Friday 25 December 2026 and the New Year holiday is Friday 1 January 2027. Both public holidays land on a Friday, which creates two three-day weekends. That is why the whole second half of December feels like one long holiday, with attractions and restaurants packed.

Q. How expensive are hotels in December?

Mid-December to early January is the most expensive stretch of the year. School holidays and year-end demand arrive together, and rooms with a view of the countdown fireworks sell out earliest. The first half of December, by contrast, is cheaper while Christmas Wonderland is already open.

Q. How do I avoid the December crowds?

Travel in the first half of the month, hit attractions right at opening or in the last two hours, and buy tickets in advance. Weekdays are noticeably better than weekends, and because so much of December happens at night, indoor attractions during the day are calmer than you would expect. Simply not queueing at a ticket counter changes the shape of your day.

Q. Does it rain a lot in December?

Yes. This is the heart of the northeast monsoon wet phase, with rain on roughly 19 days. It tends to be grey and on-and-off rather than a full day of downpour, and gusts can pick up sharply. Put outdoor plans in the morning and keep the afternoon free to move indoors.

Q. What should I wear in Singapore in December?

Light summer clothing plus a folding umbrella, quick-drying shoes and a thin layer for air conditioning. Temperatures are the lowest of the year but still around 30C, so nothing winter-weight is needed. If you have booked a fine-dining restaurant or a rooftop bar for the holidays, check whether there is a dress code.

Q. What else is on in December?

The Singapore International Marathon runs 4 to 6 December 2026, and the ZoukOut music festival is traditionally held in December. From 2026 the marathon splits the full and half distances across two days, and there are road closures in the city on race days. ZoukOut dates need to be confirmed from official announcements.

Q. Is December good with children?

Very. Christmas Wonderland is effectively a family event, and the wide choice of indoor attractions handles the rain. The catch is that this coincides with school holidays, so queues are at their longest everywhere. Pre-booking tickets and using the morning slots cuts the felt crowding substantially.

Q. Where should I stay for the countdown?

If you plan to watch the fireworks, staying around Marina Bay is far and away the most practical choice. When the event ends, the MRT and the roads fill up simultaneously, so being able to walk back is the real advantage. That said, this is exactly the area where 31 December rates rise first and rise most.

Q. How many days do I need in December?

Four or five nights gives you room, and add a day if you are building in the countdown. Rain will move something and queues are longer, so you cover less ground per day than usual. Give the evenings extra space, because that is where December lives.
